Advice From My Mother

Brush your teeth before going to school…

Romans 11:1-36

Reference: v.33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!  How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! (TNIV Bible)

Explore: Growing up, my mother gave me lots of little pieces of advice: Brush your teeth before going to school, a problem shared is a problem halved, use your manners, do it now before you forget… As a child who just wanted to have fun and play, these words of advice were often met with a disgruntled groan.  However, now as an adult, and a mother myself, I can see how brilliant these words of wisdom were.

Application: God is the infinite source of wisdom, however, there are times when we hear His advice and reply with a disgruntled groan. ‘Love your enemies’; ‘pray continually’; and ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’  But if we go through a challenging time and stick to God’s wisdom, we will soon discover that He is even more wise and faithful than our mothers.  He doesn’t give us this wisdom to make our lives harder, but, just as our mothers, He desires our lives to be the best that they can be.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for caring for us so much that you would give us wisdom through scripture.  Help us to heed the advice that you give and be faithful to put it into practice.  Amen.

What good advice have you received?
