Advertisement: Life Wanted

If you were to purely follow television commercials to determine what would ‘save your life’ what would your life look like?

Matthew 16.13-28

Reference: v.25 “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (NIV Bible)

Explore: If you were to purely follow television commercials to determine what would ‘save your life’ what would your life look like? On the one hand McDonalds burgers save your life with their taste and speed yet on the other hand Weight Watchers saves your life with their health and practicality. One advertisement will tell you that you need a 4-wheel drive to live the real life, yet then another will advocate for the speed and agility of a smaller sports car. Flight Centre will tell you the best life is when you are overseas yet Delphin will want you to have everything around the house of your dreams. No matter what advertisements say, there is always something better and more ‘necessary’ in the next ad. Ultimately, no matter how persuasive the ad is, the decision always comes down to the consumer.

Application: The question is: how are you going to live your life? We make decisions every day about how we are going to spend our money and spend our time. Are these decisions made towards things that the world says will save our life or what God says will save our life?
Jesus gave us the ultimate example of losing your life to save another. And yet in losing his life He lived out his purpose. If we want to discover our purpose we need to refocus our minds on that which gives life. We can not find it in body lotions, fast cars or dream houses. If we follow Jesus’ advertisement the way to have life is to give it away. It doesn’t look as glossy as the TV ads, but the effect is much longer lasting.

Prayer: Lord, we tend to hold on so fast to the things in life that will pass away. May we hold on to you with all we have so that we can reflect a life that is pleasing to you. Amen.
