A Twelve Year Wait

Linda is currently on maternity leave. Here is one of her most popular posts from the gospel of John.

But we had given up any hope of conceiving naturally.

John 4:43-54

Explore: Twelve years ago my husband and I decided it was time to start a family of our own. We had been married for a couple of years and we felt we had enough in place to be ready for children.

Two years later when we still hadn’t conceived we did twelve months of fertility treatment. This did nothing but send me on an emotional rollercoaster.

By the end we were told we would be great candidates for IVF, but decided it was not right for us at the time.

As the years have passed by we have welcomed four children into our family who are not biologically ours, but we have cared for like our own.  We had, however,  given up any hope of conceiving naturally.

You couldn’t imagine our surprise when five weeks ago we discovered I was pregnant. To be honest, I was surprised and almost a little angry. I couldn’t understand God’s timing and purpose in all this when we had been through so much pain and suffering in the past.

I also wondered why He hadn’t used this situation as an incredible testimony opportunity by having someone pray for us or for Him to speak to us. But no, as far as we can gauge, we haven’t done anything differently, it has just happened.

And we are so glad it has!

Application: In reflecting upon my thoughts on God around all of this I almost have to chuckle. Our journey has shown me that we can’t manipulate God.

You can’t pray a certain way or do certain things just so God will do what you want Him to do. He’s not a genie we can control.

He is our mighty Creator who holds the balance of the world in His hands. And while we may want to see signs and wonders, He often moves as silently as the whisper of the wind.

What I am proud of, is that we believed and trusted in God before we conceived. While we didn’t know the reason for our struggles, we trusted in God and committed our lives to Him without seeing the sign we so desperately desired.

Let’s not be like the early believers who need to see signs and wonders to believe in Jesus, but let’s trust in our mighty God who holds all things in His powerful hands.

Prayer: Lord, we don’t always have the answers or the understanding of why You do what You do. But we recommit our trust in You. We hand over all control and place it in Your mighty hands. Amen.

What signs are you believing for?
