There were certainly some fashion statements we would be happy to leave in the past
Reference: v.15 But the Israelites said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” (TNIV Bible)
Explore: A couple of Christmases ago I created a childhood photo montage for my sisters. I went through all our old photo albums choosing specific memories captured on film to add to my montage. It was great going through all the photos and remembering the different times we had shared as siblings. There were certainly some fashion statements we would be happy to leave in the past, but the memories from our childhood were special. When Christmas came and I gave the montages to my sisters, we spent ages looking over them and recalling all the different events from our past.
Application: It’s important to look back in our lives and remember what life used to be like. It seems it is not a new concept. When things were not going well for the Israelites they looked back in their history and remembered a time when God had protected their ancestors. Upon remembering this time, they cried out to the Lord and asked Him to help them like He had done in the past. There are times in our faith journey when we stumble and forget to rely on God, and it’s great to know that we can look back – either at our past or in the history of the Bible – and see the love and faithfulness of our God toward His people. He did not leave the sinful Israelites who continually went against Him and He will not leave us today, no matter what we have done.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for always being there for us, even if we are coming back from turning away from you. May we hold onto the times when we experienced your faithfulness and remember Your unfailing love for us. Amen.
At what time in your past have you experienced God’s grace?
