“Seriously God? Now?! You allow this to happen now?!”
Reference: “He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” Jonah 4:2 NIV
Explore: After 12 years of infertility I suddenly fell pregnant. It was totally out of the blue and a huge surprise.
The night I realised I was really pregnant I couldn’t believe God would allow this to happen. My husband and I had moved on with our lives and had recently made some major decisions on the basis of our reality of not having a baby.
“Seriously God? Now?! You allow this to happen now?!” Looking back I seemed ungrateful but I was just so shocked.
Application: When Jonah told the rebellious Ninevites to turn from their sin, they did. And he was angry with God about it.
I love that he yells these words of anger to God “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” He’s actually yelling at God for being slow to anger!
Poor God cops a lot of our emotions. We’re rarely right, but I don’t think He minds our honesty.
Thankfully, God has thick skin and uses our emotions to teach us more about Him.
Don’t be shy to let God know exactly how you feel. But be open to learn more about Him and yourself as you work through your emotions.
Prayer: Lord, give us Your wisdom when the unexpected happens. Amen.
When have you been surprised by God?
