Everyone can learn from Proverbs.
Reference: “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—” Proverbs 1:5 NIV
Explore: A friend of mine has just told me he’s going back to study. When I think of a student I often think of some trendy young adult who is just starting out on life. My friend does not fit this stereotype.
He is a father of almost 3 children, been in the work force for 20 years and has decided in his mid-forties that he’d like to learn a new skill. What better place to start than back at university.
I admire him for many reasons. The main reason is his willingness to learn something so completely new to him.
I’m still at the stage where I’m trying to build on what I’ve already learned. But to step out and try something new takes courage.
Application: In Proverbs we read much advice and wisdom given to us from King Solomon. The great thing about these passages is that everyone can learn from them.
You don’t have to be a hipster Uni student or someone who can exegete the Hebrew of the passage. No, everyone can learn from Proverbs.
Even the book itself explains how everyone can benefit – the wise can add to their learning and the discerning get guidance. What this tells me is that we never finish learning. It is a continual part of every life.
While our learning may not come in the form of a new university course, we can be open to learning from others and learning from God every day.
Prayer: Lord, open my mind to Your teaching and guidance. May I learn more and more of You every day. Amen.
