A Missing Doctor’s Certificate

The doctor didn’t hesitate to give me a script and a doctor’s certificate so I could take a day off work.

1 Samuel 29:1-11

Reference: v.6 So Achish called David and said to him, “As surely as the Lord lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day you came to me until today, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers don’t approve of you. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: I had not been this sick for a long time, but when it hit, I went down hard! Recently I became quite ill with tonsillitis.  My whole throat swelled and I could see pus at the back of my mouth.

Struggling to even swallow, I left work early and went to the doctors for antibiotics. The doctor didn’t hesitate to give me a script and a doctor’s certificate so I could take a day off work.

I went home and, outside of caring for the basic needs of my family, all I had the energy to do was to sleep and take pain killers. I didn’t even feel like eating, so I knew something was definitely wrong!!

By the end of my prescribed sick day I could start to feel the pain subside, however, I was not feeling well enough to head back to work. My boss allowed me another sick day, which I took gladly, which helped on my road to recovery.

When chatting to my superior about a doctor’s certificate, I explained I had one for my first sick day, but not for the second. He looked at me and smiled.

“There are a few people that I would insist needed a doctor’s certificate for each day they took off, but you, Linda, are not one of them. I know how hard you work and could see how sick you were. Don’t worry about it.”

Application: Often when you are a hard worker there is greater responsibility placed upon you and people seem to expect more from you. However, this week of illness showed me that there were definitely some positives in being a diligent worker.

People may rely on you more heavily, but they also trust you and give you more breathing room when you need it.  That’s what I have found anyway.

David was a great man of integrity. It takes an incredible character to be able to gain the trust of the leader of your opposition. While he didn’t win everyone over, he certainly had Achish’s respect.

While I strive to earn the trust of those close to me, I have a long way to go before I could say that I treat everyone with respect. I’m still judgmental, calculating, and wary of those I don’t know and who seem so different to me. But David has taught me that no matter what situation you find yourself in, you should always strive to earn respect from all those who are around you.

Prayer: Lord, You have love for all Your creation. Forgive me when I’m only willing to open myself up to those who are close. May I learn to be more accepting and respectful to those I don’t yet know. Amen.

How do you think the people close to you perceive you? Would a stranger see you differently?
