A Day At The Races

I’ve never been to a horse racing event and I must say it hasn’t been very high on my to-do list. I don’t follow horse racing, I don’t gamble, I don’t drink champagne, I don’t like dressing up and I struggle with copious amounts of small talk. But all of that aside, this year I went to a racing event.

It was a special ladies day at the local pub, and while they had the racing on, it was more of a social event. And all of my neighbours were in attendance.

My next door neighbour whom I get along with really well, the neighbour next to her who is a midwife and offered to help us out when I had our son, the neighbour across the road who has started doing a massive renovation and the neighbour directly across from us who has only just recently moved in. And even the lady up the street whom I see regularly when we’re out walking was in attendance.

You see, the event was not for me to drink, bet and watch the horses, it was all about connecting with my neighbourhood. To be in Community we need to spend time together and have shared experiences. This was a perfect opportunity for just that.

To go deeper in a relationship with someone you need to spend time with them. Maybe it’s your spouse, a family member or a neighbour that you want to take your relationship to the next level. That will all take time.

It’s the same with our relationship with God. He desires to spend time with us and we can learn more about Him from engaging with Him.

If you want to deepen a relationship then you need to prioritise it, even if it means doing things that don’t usually appeal to you.

Lord, You commit to us in such a significant way. May we share back with you so we can grow and develop our relationship. Amen.

Who do you need to deepen your relationship with?
