A Concerning Catch-Up

I left feeling quite uneasy

1 Corinthians 13:4-13

Reference: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I recently caught up with a friend of mine. We hadn’t seen each other for quite some time so it was great when we could finally connect again.

Unfortunately, my friend had been going through a bit of a tough time and it reflected in our catch up. Because she was so stressed she couldn’t think of anyone else except her own circumstance.

She didn’t ask me any questions as to how I was going and was rude and abrupt when I shared some thoughts about her own situation. I left feeling quite uneasy and wishing I hadn’t taken the time to catch up at all.

When I was reflecting on our catch up later that night, I realised my friend’s situation had really changed her. But it shouldn’t define her in my mind.

I reminded myself that my friend was actually an incredibly kind person. She was generous and thoughtful and caring. While this season of stress and anxiety made her less likeable it didn’t mean I didn’t love her for who she was and the best she could be.

Application: There is no doubt that I also go through tricky times. And while I always try to be caring and considerate, difficult situations often make me tetchy and irritable.

No one is perfect.

When we read through 1 Corinthians 13 we hear how we should strive to act: with patience, with kindness, not envious, not boasting and not proud.

Why does Paul write about these virtues? Because we all need to be reminded of them.

We all struggle at times to show love, and yet, it is the ultimate way we should behave. It doesn’t say we only have to show love when others love us first. No, it says loving is the greatest thing we could ever do.

The challenge is that we need to work on this every day.

I find it easier to love when I’m feeling happy, content and loved by others. But when life gets difficult I find the loving feeling fades very quickly.

Which makes me think love isn’t a feeling. It’s a concerted effort we make to give the best to the people around us.

May we strive to make the effort to love each and every day.

Prayer: Lord, I’m reminded that we love because You first loved us. Thank You for Your love. It makes us greater, even when we are struggling. Amen.

How can you show love today?
