A Compliment From Christ

I always enjoy getting encouragement, but it’s different depending on whom it comes from.

Mark 12:35-44

Reference: “They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:44 TNIV Bible)

Explore: After recently doing a stint on radio, I was given some lovely feedback by those around me. Some of my colleagues mentioned my voice on air and even some friends sent text messages commenting on the breaks they had heard.

I always enjoy getting encouragement, but it’s different depending on whom it comes from. When one of the managers at work complimented me I was truly chuffed.

I replied by saying, “Thank you, that means a lot coming from you,” and the manager was taken aback. He wondered why it was different coming from him; did he not give out compliments easily?

I explained that he was a truly honest man and would not have said anything if he didn’t believe it, so therefore, I knew his compliment was sincere.

Application: Compliments are awesome and I don’t think you can ever get enough. But they mean so much more when they come from those who are honest and who understand the situation you were in.

When Jesus was in a temple, He noticed people giving their financial offerings. Those who were rich gave plenty, but it was a widow’s offering that Jesus highlighted.

She only gave a few small coins but Jesus gave her the biggest compliment. I don’t know if she heard his comment, but surely that was the greatest affirmation she could ever receive.

We often look for encouragement from our friends or superiors, but the One we should really strive to impress is the Lord Himself. When He looks at our lives could He make the same comment as He gave to the widow, “She put in everything.”

Prayer: Lord, You gave us everything and yet we hold so tightly to all that we have. May we have a generous heart with our finances as well as our time and all our resources. Amen.

What compliment do you hear Jesus giving you?
