It’s not that the students have forgotten how to behave well…
Reference: v.2 Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: It’s amazing how much a classroom can change if the teacher steps outside for a few minutes. A group of teenagers can go from an orderly, well-behaved group to an unruly, spit-ball throwing rabble in under three minutes! It’s not that the students have forgotten how to behave well, it’s just that they no longer have someone holding them accountable for their behaviour.
Application: While I no longer sit in a classroom I can certainly see the influence someone can have on my life. When I’m eating lunch with a fitness fanatic I am more conscious of what I am ordering, when I’m writing a document that my boss can see I’m more conscious of my language and when I’m praying out loud in front of pastors and leaders I’m more conscious of what I am saying. When we have a positive role model looking over our lives then it can help us to strive to be better people. When Joash was king the Bible said that he obeyed God’s laws when he had a priest working alongside him. It’s good for us to find wise people to associate with so we can learn from them and strive to be better people in all the areas of our lives.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the great example Jesus was for us. Help us to gather other people around us so that we can learn from them too. Amen.
Who is someone who is a positive influence on your life?
