A Blessed Proposal

When her boyfriend asked to speak to them privately they knew something was coming

Luke 24:50-53

Reference: And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. (‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭50‬ KJV)

Explore: Friends of ours have just had their daughter announce her engagement. This is a very exciting time and one they had been anticipating for quite a while.

Of course, they had had their suspicions for quite some time and when her boyfriend asked to speak to them privately they knew something was coming. When he asked for their daughter’s hand in marriage they were all too pleased to give him their blessing.

I thought it was lovely that he had asked them. These days, children are often already living out of home when they get engaged, but it’s a lovely gesture of respect and honour to the parents.

Let’s be honest, if the parents had have said no, they probably would have gotten married anyway! But the blessing from the parents is something that’s definitely worth seeking.

Application: I know my father gave my husband his blessing and it has helped to keep the relationship strong between us all.

However, we can often seek blessings in the wrong places. We look for blessing from those who only see our outward appearance rather than those who know our hearts.

Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples His blessing. What an absolute privilege this would have been.

It had such a big impact on them that they left “continually praising God”.

When I read this I thought, “I want that! I want a blessing from God.” And then I realised that was such a stupid thought! I receive blessings from God all the time.

He blesses me through the love of my family. He blesses me by restoring peace to my soul. He blesses me through His relationship in worship. How blessed I am from God.

And yet, could I say I “continually praise God”? My response to His blessing is far less than of His disciples after His ascension.

This passage has challenged me to rejoice more in the blessings God has bestowed upon me. My life is so much richer from being blessed by Christ.

Prayer: Lord, Your blessings are new every morning. May I continually rejoice in You. Amen.

How has God blessed you?
