We don’t have to worry too much about any severe diseases they may be carrying
Reference: “And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.” Exodus 8:24 NIV
Explore: Our home is close to a river, so we always have mosquitos flying about. While we are fortunate in Australia that we don’t have to worry too much about any severe diseases they may be carrying, they still leave an itchy mark when they bite.
There have been numerous occasions when I have woken up in the middle of the night only to hear that buzzing sound zip past my ear. I sit up straight, the light goes on and my eyes dart around the room looking for the small flying culprit.
I cannot sleep until I have sprayed the mosquito and know I will not get bitten by that one nuisance.
Application: This is the extreme I go to for just one biting mosquito. Imagine what it would be like if they were in plague proportions. I can guarantee I would not be sleeping much that night.
When we hear of the plagues that harassed Pharaoh and Egypt it’s easy to gloss over all the details. I mean, there are 10 plagues and we know the worst one is at the end.
But let’s not forget about how horrible the first nine would also have been. All those plagues and yet Pharaoh still said no.
Moses and Aaron must have been wondering how long this was going to go on for. Their trust in God continued throughout the whole ordeal and they were putting their reputation on the line with their own people.
Surely by plague four they would have been questioning God’s plan, and yet they endured right to the end.
My patience with God is not that strong. One little thing goes wrong and I throw my arms up in defeat.
May I learn from Moses and Aaron. May my commitment to God go deeper so I can endure the challenges of His calling to witness the freedom it brings in the end.
Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I falter. May my commitment to You be strong enough to endure many trials. May I know Your love and power will conquer all. Amen.
What “plague” are you enduring for the sake of your calling?
