If you went to a paint shop and asked for some white paint the sales person would probably have a little chuckle and then ask you a barrage of questions:
Do you want a gloss or matte finish?
Are you after a white or a neutral?
Do you want a warm or a cool white?
And that’s even before you get to pricing!!
There is no straight white. It’s all shot with another colour or shade. Which means there is a huge variety of white.
This diversity reminds me of Christianity. We all have the same base – Christ – but we’re all shot with different gifts, abilities, upbringings, theologies, experiences and biases. This brings a whole rainbow effect.
And that’s how God designed it. He’s quite comfortable with diversity, I think it’s us Christians who would rather have God securely placed in an understandable box.
The challenge for me is to love other Christians of a different shade just as much as God does. Because my faith is so important and personal to me, I often struggle more with a Christian who has a different way of viewing God than someone who doesn’t believe at all! This is something that needs to change in me. As I grow in maturity and confidence in my faith I need to remind myself that someone else’s interpretation of God does not exclude them from His love.
Lord, may I embrace diversity as well as You have created it. Amen.
Who is different to you but needs your embrace?
