When Should You Start Dating?

When I asked him why they weren’t dating his answer took me by surprise.

2 Kings 7:1-20

Reference: “The officer had said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?” The man of God had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”” ‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭7:19‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: A friend of mine was tying to decide whether he should start dating a certain girl. He went backwards and forwards in his mind, struggling to make the decision.

I spoke to him on a number of occasions and after a few months I couldn’t believe he was still single. When I asked him why they weren’t dating his answer took me by surprise.

He said he wasn’t good enough for her.

I’m not sure where he got the idea that he had to be perfect before he started dating, but he clearly hadn’t spoken to any of the couples I know! Thankfully, we don’t have to be perfect to start dating someone, we just have to be open to growing with them.

Application: People often make this same excuse before engaging with God. They worry about what they’ve done, who they’ve been around and where they’ve grown up.

But God does not look at these things when he considers us. Thankfully our past, and even present, failures do not turn God away.

I was reminded of this reality when I read 2 Kings 7. The people had constantly turned away from God and chosen other gods to worship, but He still intervened to save them.

Over and over we read in the Bible of God saving people who have made foolish choices. And He does the same for us today.

Don’t wait until you are perfect to connect with God. He’s waiting for you now.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your love and grace that allows You to love us now, even in our brokenness. May nothing hold us back from loving and serving You. Amen.

What holds you back from connecting with God?
