When Life Brings Meaning

Some reflections were helpful and brought clarity and comfort

Joel 1:1-20

Reference: “Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes— joy and gladness from the house of our God?” ‭‭Joel‬ ‭1:16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: After the September 11 attacks in America there were record numbers of people flocking to churches in the following weeks. When people were trying to work out what was happening to their world, many turned to God to find hope and meaning.

Some reflections were helpful and brought clarity and comfort. Other evangelistic analysts took the opportunity to damn minorities and harbour fear in the people.

I am a big believer in reflecting on what is happening in my life and in the world. Many things we see and experience can help us connect with our ever-present Lord.

Application: When Joel spoke to God’s people in his Old Testament book, he made comment on something very close to the people. They had just experienced a devastating locust attack. They now understood what it was to have everything stripped from them.

Joel used this example to forewarn them of what would happen if they continued to turn from God. A devastation of insects would be nothing compared to a life without God.

We may not have a Joel in our life, but God can still be talking to us through situations happening in our lives today. Is there a recurring theme that keeps presenting itself to you? Is there a message of hope, grace, love, warning that God wants to give you?

Be open to His prompting. It may not always come in the form you expect.

Prayer: Lord, You love us and want to communicate with us. May our ears be open to what You have to say to us. Amen.

What message has God given you recently?
