Wheeling and Dealing

It was incredibly hard not to laugh at how gullible he was

Exodus 10:1-29

Reference: v11 No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence. (TNIV Bible)

Explore:  When I was leading the children’s ministry we had a theme that explored the Bible. During the term we were trying to teach the children to learn all the books of the Bible in order. At one point we gave each child a book of the Bible and they had to place themselves in order. An older boy called Joshua heard that a younger boy Michael was assigned the book Joshua. He was keen to have the book of his namesake and so he approached Michael to make a deal. I was in a position where I overheard Joshua start wheeling and dealing. He said to Michael, “Hey, if you give me the book of Joshua, I’ll swap you with the book of Michael.” Michael thought this was a great trade so eagerly handed over his assigned book… only to discover that he had been left with the book of Habakkuk! It was incredibly hard not to laugh at how gullible he was, and to chastise Joshua when he had been so clever. It was clear that Michael should have been more aware of whom he was dealing with.

Application: When Pharaoh was negotiating with Moses and Aaron I don’t think he really bargained on whom he was dealing with.  While Michael was always going to get the raw end of the deal when negotiating with clever Joshua, so too, was Pharaoh when negotiating with God.  Who can compete with the bargaining skills of God when He has all of nature on His side?! It seems ridiculous how petty Pharaoh was, however, sometimes I think I can get to that point too.  I know what is best for me and yet I still try to bargain my way out of a situation with God. God is incredibly gracious and merciful, but He still knows what is best for us. May we be wiser than Michael, and more trusting than Pharaoh, when it comes to our negotiations with God.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for having my best interests at heart. May I be more faithful when it comes to obeying your plans. Amen.

How have you negotiated with God?
