Explore: Saturday Night Live seems to have been the breeding ground for many brilliant comedians. Some of the characters formed for sketches on the show have even made it into movie format. Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar were two of those characters. These two metal-loving guys set up a 'studio' in their basement to broadcast their show onto a local cabel network. Living in Australia I only came across these two characters when they made their movie debut in 1992 with Wayne's World, adding many laughs to the world as well as coining some catch-phrases which have been added to the pop-culture lexicon. One of these phrases is, "We're not worthy!" Wayne and Garth would repeat this saying, while bowing, to guests who the two deem themselves unworthy to interview. This phrase was then repeated all throughout the 90s by thousands of people as a humbling act towards someone of great worth.
While Wayne and Garth would repeat this saying to humble themselves, I notice that this passage in Ephesians calls us to be worth. I don't think it is referring to us being a famous heavy-metal band, but it begs the question, are we really worthy?
Application: On the one hand, if we are to compare ourselves to God, then we are totally unworthy. He is the Lord of lords, the Creator of the Universe, the Beginning and the End. We are totally unworthy and humbled in his presence.
Yet on the other hand, if we have dedicated our lives to worship God then we know that he has washed us clean and has promised to be with us every step of the way. When we have the presence of our Almighty Father with us, we are totally worthy to do all things through Him.
Each of us has been called to use our gifts and abilities to serve God. You are worthy! He has formed you, bestowed gifts upon you and given you the Holy Spirit to guide you. You are worthy! God has given you everything you need, now it's just up to you to start living a life as a worthy servant of God.
Prayer: Lord, you have paid the price. We were totally unworthy and yet you have given us worth. May we honour you by living a life worthy of your call. Amen.
Let's not be bashful, how has God made you worthy? Speak out the gifts God has given you. It's not boasting, it's proclaiming the worth that God has given.
