The Love Passage

Some people intentionally move away from this passage as it’s read out at so many weddings.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Reference: “If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a couple of weddings recently. Each wedding has been uique in many different ways.

One was very religious, one was by the beach and one was a surprise for all the guests.

The one consistent thing in each wedding was they all had a part of 1 Corinthians 13 read out during the ceremony. This was not something I initiated, but something that evolved separately for each of the couples.

Some people intentionally move away from this passage as it’s read out at so many weddings. But I love it.

And I particularly love it when it makes its way into weddings where the couple wouldn’t class themselves as practicing Christians. How great, that on the most important day of their lives, they are including a description of God.

Application: God is love. And so when we read of how we are to love we are actually reading about how we are to be more like God.

The better we love, the better we are representing God here on earth.

And let’s face it, we all need reminding of how to love better.  Even if I went to a wedding every single weekend and heard this passage, it still wouldn’t be enough to teach me how to truly love.

So as you read this passage, whether you are hearing it for the first time or the 100th time, soak it in. Reflect on it, consider it and try to replicate it.

For the more you live according to 1 Corinthians 13, the more like God you will become.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your love. Thank You for teaching us the best way to live through love.  Amen.

How can you try to live more according to 1 Corinthians 13?
