The Call Back

A call back is when they make a reference to a previous joke

John 10:7-10

Reference: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” ‭‭John‬ ‭10:10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I love to laugh and therefore I love to listen to good comedy. It’s a real skill to be able to make people laugh.

There aren’t too many people who can just get up and make a crowd of people chuckle. The best comedians plan, practice and hone their skill.

My favourite is when the comedian does a call back. A call back is when they make a reference to a previous joke, adding to their current joke and making it even funnier due to their previous reference.

A good comedian will make this sound incidental but you can guarantee it has been planned and well prepared. They know their content so well, they can refer back to anything said very easily.

Application: While the Bible isn’t particularly known for its humour, it is certainly known for its call backs. In every book you read you can see references to other themes mentioned previously.

John 10:10 would have to be one of my all time favourite call backs. So often the Bible gives us wisdom and guidance as to how we should live our lives. In living like that we are “having life, and having it to the full.”

The more you read God’s word and apply it to your life the more you can see Him helping us to have life and have it to the full. That is God’s call back. That we would follow Him so we will live life to its full.

Prayer: Lord, no one can fill our lives like You. You give us meaning and purpose. May we continue to follow You in all we do so that we live the best life we can. Amen.

How are you living life to God’s fullness?
