Sprung!

Linda is away during March, Clayton Bjelan brings you today’s devotion…

I even get caught out by my wife

Joshua 1:6-18

Reference:  v9 This is my command–be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go (NLT Bible)

Explore: Have you ever been caught out doing something that you shouldn’t have been doing?  I remember at school when my mates and I went through a phase of playing Black Jack with a tiny little set of playing cards – we were always nervous about a teacher catching us at the back of the class (which of course happened – and we had the cards confiscated!).

It happens at work too – maybe you decided to just check Facebook, or clicked a link on a news website, that meant you followed another link to another story, and then another story, and next thing you know your boss walks behind you and you realise that you’ve wasted 15 minutes!

I even get caught out by my wife when I am just watching pointless TV – you know those times when you are just flicking channels for the sake of flicking channels, and then, suddenly, she comes into the room and I quickly turn off the TV because I know I’m just wasting time!

Application: When we read a verse like this one which says “…God is with you wherever you go”, we can sometimes picture God like an over-bearing teacher or an angry boss.  And yes, there is an element that when ‘God is with us wherever we go’ it’s good to use that as a reminder to ask ourselves ‘am I proud of my current actions’?

But I don’t think God is really all that much like a nasty headmaster waiting to catch us out.  I think instead he’d want us to take this verse as an opportunity to understand the power and possibility that God IS with us WHEREVER we go.  How incredible is that!

It means that God can do remarkable things through me, not just at church or when I am reading the bible, or this devotion – but anywhere… at the supermarket, when I’m cleaning the house, at work, picking up the kids from school – anywhere!

Prayer: Dear God, help me get a fresh revelation today that you are truly with me wherever I go – thank you.  In everything I do, may I be a shining light for you into this world.

How can you grasp a fresh sense of God’s power in your life today?
