Singing Through the Motions

It’s so easy to sing a song many times – so often that you know the words off by heart – and yet you don’t really notice the words of the song.

Psalm 51:1-19

Reference: v.10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: The beauty in growing up in church is that you sing many different songs throughout your life.  Even in my short lifetime I have sung hymns, psalms, choruses and now the more contemporary worship songs.  It’s so easy to sing a song many times – so often that you know the words off by heart – and yet you don’t really notice the words of the song.  It’s like you are just singing a succession of sounds rather than taking in the meaningful words.  It’s not until you pay particular attention or you see these words mentioned elsewhere that you notice the meaning and the origin of the lyrics.

Application: I love it when I find the lyrics of a known song in the Bible.  You realize that while you’ve been singing this song for years, other people have actually been reading the same words for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.  And when you read them in the Bible it makes you stop and notice them more and then the song seems to have so much more meaning.  It’s so important for us not to just go through our worship experiences singing songs and reading the Bible or repeating liturgies without taking in the words we are saying.  When we sing, may we truly mean the words we say and when we read may we not rush through but meditate on the word.

Prayer: Lord, it’s so easy to rush through life and just go through the motions.  May we be mindful of the words we read and the songs we sing so that we do not just offer you sounds but give you the intentions of our hearts.  Amen.

What is a worship song you love singing at the moment? Go through the words line by line and glean new meaning from the song.
