If they wanted the job they were to read the contract, sign it and bring it back.
Reference: v.18 They do not understand, and they know nothing, because they refuse to listen. So they cannot have the life that God gives. (NCV Bible)
Explore: Our pastor was telling a story at church the other week about a big corporation that was looking to hire some new contract lawyers. They looked at offering ten people a job and sent them away to read the employment agreement. If they wanted the job they were to read the contract, sign it and bring it back. Written within the given contract was a paragraph that said if the lawyer read this part of the contract they would receive an instant $10,000 bonus. All ten lawyers came back with a signed contract however only one out of the ten had noticed the $10,000 paragraph. When he handed in the contract he asked whether that paragraph was for real and his new employers said that it was and awarded him the bonus. The other nine contract lawyers did not receive the extra money but I'm pretty sure from that moment onwards they read their contracts a lot more closely!
Application: God has promised us great gifts if we are to connect in with Him. It's all written in the pages of the Bible but so often we don't extend ourselves to take the time to read what it says. A Christian who doesn't read the Bible is like a contract lawyer who doesn't read the fine print – there's plenty of them out there but they don't reap the great rewards. The amazing thing about God is that if we believe in Him then by His grace we receive eternal life with Him. However there is so much more that He has in store for us and His love and blessings are written within the pages of the Bible. If we connect with Him and connect in with His word then we are able to see how much God has in store for each one of us – and believe me, it's even better than $10,000!
Prayer: Lord, Your riches are made available to each one of us. May we learn more about You so that we may live in the Light of Your way. Amen.
What riches has God blessed you with?
