Mowing The Grass

At one point the neighbours on the other side even complained about their grass situation.

Isaiah 29:1-24

Reference: v.23 When they see among them their children,
the work of my hands,
they will keep my name holy;
they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob,
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. (TNIV Bible)

Explore: Just after we moved into our new house we had a young family move next door. They were lovely and friendly and we quickly built a friendship with them.

The mum had a business at home as she cared for her young son, while the dad worked hard as a tradesman six days a week. There was one thing, however, that they really didn’t like… mowing their lawns!

They would let their front grass grow so high they had to use a whipper-snipper to get it back down to a bearable level. At one point the neighbours on the other side even complained about their grass situation.

A couple of months ago I noticed that things had changed. I realized their grass had been mowed regularly and it had not got out of hand for quite some time.

I wondered what the change could be. Maybe they hired someone to cut the grass for them, maybe they got a new machine that made it more enjoyable to cut, or maybe they had got a really harsh warning from the local council.

We ended up having dinner with them recently and we discovered the change. Their son was now old enough to play in the backyard. He was a huge Australian football fan and was constantly outside kicking a ball around the backyard.

For their son to play well in the back yard the grass needed to be cut. So, while the father cut the grass for his son out the back, he took a bit of extra time to mow the front as well.

Application: It is amazing what a loving father will do for his children. A task that seems unbearable will be accomplished regularly for the sake of his child.

God acknowledges how precious children are. It is His creation that brings wonder into our world. Just like my neighbour changed his behaviour for his child, the people of God were to change their behaviour through acknowledging their children as God’s creation.

No matter how old or young we are, we are all God’s children. He created us and loves us even more than my neighbour loves his son.

We need to remember that He will always do what is best for us, so we can fully trust in Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You love us so completely. May we acknowledge You as our gracious parent and trust that You have the best in store for us. Amen.

How is God like a perfect parent to you?
