It is more offensive to ask someone how much money they have than to ask how much they weigh or how old they are.
1 Corinthians 16:1-24
Reference: v.2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: I have just been welcomed into the world of the mortgage. It was not a world I entered into lightly but it seems that I have finally arrived! Having been fairly money conscious all my life we are not totally overwhelmed by our mortgage repayments but it has given me an insight into the financial burden some people carry.
Application: Money is a fairly taboo issue. It is more offensive to ask someone how much money they have than to ask how much they weigh or how old they are. And outward appearances can be deceiving. Just because someone has the latest technology, car or lounge suite it does not mean that they are not totally consumed by their debt. When the Apostle Paul talks to the Corinthians about giving money he uses the term 'in keeping with your income'. I really like this as it does not assume that everyone is in the same financial position. It's not right to tell people to give a certain amount of money but I think it is important for us to be counter-culture and give people guidelines to how to be faithful with their money. We all handle money differently, we all have varying incomes, expenses and debts but we are all called by God to give generously and to be faithful with what He has given us.
Prayer: Lord, we can often be very precious with our money. May we be wise with what we have and serve You generously. Amen.
How are your finances looking at the moment? How faithful have you been with what God has given you?
