Like Mother, Like Daughter

As soon as she started talking I was filled with familiarity

John 8:31-47

Reference: ““Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.” ‭‭John‬ ‭8:39‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I recently bumped into an old family friend. Her father had been the pastor of our church when she was only a young child.

As I looked at the adult standing before me, I couldn’t believe how many years had passed by since I’d seen any of her family.

And yet, as soon as she started talking I was filled with familiarity. Her voice and her mannerisms were exactly like her mother’s.

The way she laughed, the way she phrased sentences and the sound of her voice was so close to that of her mum. It was clear to see the impact a parent had had on this child.

Application: No matter what we think of our parents, it’s hard for them not to rub off on us. For those who love their parents, they may even make an effort to be more like them.

When Jesus came against some resistance from God’s people He confronted them on their actions. They said they believed in God and yet their actions were far from Him.

It is easy to hide our faith if we don’t replicate Jesus’ actions. But for those who truly love Jesus, they work hard to follow in His ways.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes when we follow You we are singled out or even pushed to the side. Help us to learn Your ways so that they rub off on us so naturally that our default is to live like you. Amen.

How easily are you following Jesus’ actions?
