Lasting Impression

I must admit, often I am so caught up on deepening my own faith that I don't stop to think how I can leave a lasting impression for others to deepen their faith.

2 Peter 1.12-21

Reference:  v.15  And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.  (NIV Bible)

Explore:  People say that as you get older your memory gets worse.  This is very concerning to me.  My memory is already terrible!  I hate to imagine what it's going to be like in another 30 years time.  Due to my lack of memory I have created strategies to help me remember important things:
1. I always write lists.  When I start my day, I write a list.  When I'm going to the shops, I write a list.  When I'm preparing for a phonecall, I write a list.  Any visual reminder is always helpful!
2. I keep my diary close by.  My diary, whilst still in paper form, is a key to helping me remember important dates, meetings and activities.  If it doesn't go in the diary then it is lost for all time!
3.  I tell others what I need to remember.  This has a dual effect.  While I am telling someone else my plans it helps my thoughts to sink deeper into my brain and I am more able to recall the details later.  On the other hand, if I forget, there is someone else who is there to remind me.
These are just three of mine, but many people have different techniques to remember important things.

Application:  When Simon Peter was writing his letters, he felt an urgency to keep a lasting memory of his understanding of Jesus so that his thoughts would not die with him.  Writing his letters would have been part of consolidating his thoughts and a way to remind others of the majesty of Christ.  I wonder whether he would have thought that 2000 years later people would still be reminded of Jesus' power through his writings.  I must admit, often I am so caught up on deepening my own faith that I don't stop to think how I can leave a lasting impression for others to deepen their faith.  It's a rather confronting thought: What reminder will we leave when we pass away? Thankfully the Spirit moves through all the earth and is constantly pointing us to God, reminding us of His love, His grace and His mission. It's important for us to be obedient to God and leave ourselves open to how the Spirit can prompt us to leave a lasting impression here on earth for God.

Prayer:  Lord, you are forever.  You will always be.  Help us to point others to you and leave a lasting impression that can change people's lives.  Amen.

What reminder will you leave when you pass away?
