John 11 – Lost For Words

It felt like I was going a million miles a second and had no idea what was before me.

John 11: 1-57

Reference:  v.35  Jesus wept. (NIV Bible)

Explore:  The most intense rollercoaster ride I have ever been on was Space Mountain at Disneyland.  You sit in a little caboose with only a couple of people and enter into a pitch black room.  As the ride gets faster and faster it takes you up, down and around with the only light being small sparks to represent stars.  It felt like I was going a million miles a second and had no idea what was before me.  I remember when the ride finally finished and I stepped back onto solid ground.  My whole body had gone into a happily stunned shock that all I could do was giggle and say, 'Whoa… wow… phew…'  I was lost for words.

Application:  There are some times in our lives when we are truly lost for words.  It may be an intense experience like my rollercoaster ride or it may be when you are overcome by another emotion.  Maybe someone has surprised you, someone has hurt you or you are suddenly feeling immense grief.  The shortest (but I think one of the most powerful verses in the Bible) is John 11:35 – Jesus wept: Two words that speak of so much emotion.  We often hang on to the words of Jesus, we memorise them, recite them, and try to live by them, but these two words speak of emotion that shows that Jesus was not a robot.  He did not go about without feeling or compassion but he loved, he lost and he wept.  May we not forget that our Saviour experienced the same emotions as us.  I can't say for sure that He was ever lost for words but he certainly expressed himself with tears on numerous occasions.

Prayer:  Lord, thank you being willing to experience all the emotions of humanity – the good and the sorrowful.  May we look to You through all the feelings that we experience and know that You understand.  Amen.

What emotion are you feeling today?  Let Jesus know how you feel, even if you don't have the words to explain.
