John 1 – Behind the Scenes

I’m always drawn to the ‘Thanks’ paragraph where the artist mentions all their family, mates and production team who have assisted them.

John 1:1-51

Reference: v.8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. (NIV Bible)

Explore: I don’t know if this in normal or not, but I always read the acknowledgements page that is listed at the front of most books.  You know the page, where the author names all the people who have helped them to make the book possible.  It’s the same when I look through a CD cover, I’m always drawn to the ‘Thanks’ paragraph where the artist mentions all their family, mates and production team who have assisted them along the journey.  While the author or the artist is the one that really gets all the glory, it’s always interesting for me to hear about the people who have contributed behind the scenes.  The book would never have been published or the CD never released without all the people listed.  But because these people worked hard behind the scenes, the author or the artist has had the chance to shine.

Application: When John the Baptist was alive his mission was to point people to the Messiah, the one who would come to save the world.  He was quite clear that he was not the saviour, but someone greater was to come.  He committed his whole life to work tirelessly ‘behind the scenes’ so that the Messiah would be acknowledged.  It’s always nice to be the person up the front who gets the credit for the whole team’s work, however our aim as disciples is to work hard behind the scenes so that Jesus gets the credit.  He is the One we want to promote; He is the ‘talent’ that people need to connect with.  He has given us gifts and talents so we can work hard to promote His name.  If we can make it to the list of acknowledgements for Him then our life has had purpose.  May we live with the desire, not to promote our own name, but to work tirelessly behind the scenes to support the name of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, You are the way, the truth and the life.  We are so blessed to have You in our lives.  May we strive to promote Your name in all areas of our lives.  Amen.

How can you promote the name of Jesus today?
