It was enlightening to see that even from small churches with no wizz-bang children's ministry, God had grown some awesome leaders.
Reference: v.17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there." (NIV Bible)
Explore: A few months ago I was sitting around a table with some highly influencial pastors who were passionate about children's ministry. We were discussing how to resource large and small children ministries within a particular denomination. As the conversation continued we started to discover more about each other's backgrounds. The majority of us had grown up in rather small congregations, even to the extent that in some cases the pastor and their siblings had been the only children in the whole church. It was enlightening to see that even from small churches with no wizz-bang children's ministry, God had grown some awesome leaders.
Ishmael had a very humble beginning. He was the child of a servant and despised by his father's wife. And here we find him left to die under a bush in the desert. But God is not restricted by humble beginnings and so He promised to make Ishmael into a great nation.
Application: Sometimes it is hard to see beyond our current situation. However, when God is involved in our lives we believe that all things are possible through Christ. We must not limit ourselves to our current situation but know that God desires us to have life and have it to the fullest. If we diligently and sacrificially dedicate our lives to Him then He can make something beautiful out of our humble beginnings.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we are often limited but what we see directly in front of our eyes. May our faith build and grow as we believe in that which we can not see. Amen.
What have you seen grow in your life from humble beginnings? What is still yet to grow?
