Happy Birthday To You

This week was my birthday. It landed on a Monday this year.

It started like any other day. My eight month old son woke at 3am for a feed and then didn’t resettle until after 4. I then took him for a walk at 6.30 so he didn’t wake the rest of the household.

As soon as I was a decent distance away from the house it started raining – because I live in Melbourne and it has the right to change its weather at least a couple of times a day. As I walked in the rain I looked ahead at my day. It looked like any other normal day.

I still had to prepare all my son’s meals, I still had to go to work, I still had to attend all my meetings. Just another normal day.

But then I thought, what if, instead of viewing my birthday like a normal day, I viewed my normal days as so special it was like they were my birthdays? Sure, there’s a lot less presents and cake on the other 364 days of the year but what if I acknowledged that every day was God given and special?

The day was the same but my mindset was different.

That really helped me look at my “normal” birthday in a new light. As well as looking at the rest of the week in a new light too.

God has given us this new day. It is up to us as to how we approach it and what we achieve within it.

Lord, Thank You for this new day. May I approach it with gratitude and commit to it like it’s my last. Amen.

How have you approached today?
