Guard Dog

When out for my morning walk I went past a certain house. As I strolled across the footpath at the front of the home a dog suddenly started barking.

It took me by surprise and i literally jumped off the ground. Once my heart had stopped racing I started to look around for the noisy surprise artist. It took me a while but I finally realised all that barking was in fact coming from the front doorstep of the house.

As I finally got my feet moving again the dog never stopped barking as I carried on my way, away from the offending home.

The sounded aggressive, territorial, confronting and scared me senseless. And yet, as I walked away I realised one striking reality… the dog never left the front step.

It reminded me of some Christians. Those that sit in the pews or behind their computers and are quick to share exactly what they think God thinks. And yet when it comes to actually living out their faith they are more comfortable sitting on their front doorstep barking opinions.

The one thing about this dog is it’s not going to do me any harm, apart from maybe raise my heart rate for giving me such a shock! However Christians who just sit and spout their opinions, without living out Jesus’ Love and grace, can be extremely damaging. They portray a type of Christian that God would not align Himself with.

Let’s be mindful, the next time we type or verbalise our opinion, to 1) make sure it is inline with Jesus’ teaching and 2) make sure we are living it out before we are mouthing off about it.

Lord, purify my heart so I am quick to act and slow to judge. Amen.

When have you found yourself like the dog on the doorstep?
