Being unfamiliar with the Filipino terrain, I was sure that I was going to trip and fall spread-eagled in to the next muddy puddle.
2 Timothy 1:1-18

Explore: Last week I found myself trekking through the country side of a rural area in the Philippines. I had not been anticipating such an off-the-track trek as I was only wearing sandals and carrying two heavy bags of groceries. You see I had set out in search of my parent’s sponsor child and in the process my guide had become terribly lost. Night had already fallen and a steady drizzle had set in, but I followed along obediently through the back paddocks of this rural area as we were committed to finding the right house. Not only had I not dressed appropriately for such a journey but I had not brought my torch therefore I struggled to see even one metre ahead of me. Being unfamiliar with the Filipino terrain, I was sure that I was going to trip and fall spread-eagled in to the next muddy puddle. My only survival technique was to stay close to my Filipino guide and to place my feet in the exact spot they had stepped in front of me. Although they were exploring a new area themselves, they had grown up in the Philippines and so could predict this new terrain better than I could. We may have been lost but I felt confident in the footsteps of the guide that went before me.
Application: As we trek through our faith journey we often explore areas that we’ve never been through before. We can feel confused, fearful and even disoriented. It is so important for us to have spiritual guides who may not have all the answers but knows what it is to explore faith issues. Timothy had a great history of faithful people in his life. For us it might also be someone in our family who has a strong faith that we can follow or it might be someone at the church, someone at work or even someone we’ve met through Christian networks. These guides can be a great comfort to us and incredibly helpful as we explore new areas in our life.
Prayer: Lord, help us to find good guides and mentors who can lead us in to a greater relationship with you. Amen.
Who has been an important guide for you? When will you connect with them again?
