Faith Comes First

Jesus didn’t heal people to give them faith, he healed people because they had faith.

Matthew 13.44-58

Reference: v.58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. (NIV Bible)

Explore: The Guinness Book of Records is full of people who can do amazing things. There is a man who can make a model balloon dog in 6.5 seconds; two people who went on a windsurfing journey for 5,045 kilometers; and a man who can burp as loud as 104.9 dB! But they don’t just get this prestigious award by writing in and saying they can do it, they must perform the task before a Guinness Book of Records official. The official has to see the occurrence before allocating the award. ‘Show me, and then I’ll believe’. It is so much easier to believe in something or someone if you are able to see their abilities for yourself.
Jesus got this a lot when he walked on earth. People wanted to hear his teachings, see his healings and touch the scars on his hands…and then they would believe. But that did not make them better believers. Anyone can see and believe, but Jesus said, ‘Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’ (John 20.29). Jesus didn’t heal people to give them faith, he healed people because they had faith. I think we tend to get it the other way around.

Application: God can do amazing things in our lives, but do we believe that? Often we wait until the amazing things occur and then we believe God can do it. That is not faith. Faith is believing in what could be, not believing in what has been. How is your faith today? Are you holding on to what you have heard that God has done in someone else’s life; or are you looking forward in faith to what God can do in your own life? If you desire something amazing to happen in your life, don’t forget that faith comes first.

Prayer: Lord, so often we want to see before we believe. Instill in us a faith that believes in You, even when we feel you are absent. Amen.
