While his first comic strip appeared in 1950, it seems he is still very relevant for people today.
Reference: v.40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. (TNIV Bible)
Explore: As a child, I never really got into the comic strip Peanuts with Charlie Brown. The closest I came to really knowing anything about Peanuts was that a family friend owned a little Snoopy toy. Every time we visited them I would always go straight to Snoopy to play with him and carry him around.
He was clearly my favourite toy at our friend’s house. So much so that when our friends moved away, they actually gave me Snoopy to keep and I still have him to this day!
So, while I did know about Charlie Brown and Snoopy, I had never read the comic. I am finding today, however, that his quotes and pictures continue to pop up everywhere. While his first comic strip appeared in 1950, it seems he is still very relevant for people today.
Today I saw someone post this Charlie Brown picture on a social media site. When I first saw it I thought it was true and very cute.
Application: Upon reading my Matthew passage for the day, I noticed that the above picture was not only relevant for me, but also for Jesus.
He never asked much of His disciples, but they couldn’t even stay awake for him when He knew that trouble was so close.
In today’s society we often feel that we need to have all the answers and yet, often, we just need to be present. We will all come across people who are going through struggles, and when we do, our presence is going to be so much more important for them than our words.
Prayer: Lord, we know how much peace Your presence brings to us. Help us to be there for others who are also in need. Amen.
When has someone been there for you? Who needs your presence today?
