She had already given the most desirable gift.
Reference: “Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” Micah 6:7 NIV
Explore: A friend of mine asked me what she could buy me for my baby shower. She had a few suggestions from personal pampering to clothing for the baby.
While I had received many wonderful gifts for my baby shower, I was surprised by her question.
She is one of the most generous people I know, so I wasn’t surprised that she would want to buy me something. I was surprised because she had basically organised the whole baby shower and now she was asking what gift she could give as well!
She had been the gift. She had given the gift of time, organisation, resources, support, research… I could not have done it without her and yet here she is still offering me more.
I struggled to find the words to let her know that she had already given the most desirable gift.
Application: In Micah 6 the writer asks what the Lord requires of us. Many people at the time thought that sacrifices and gifts were the best they could give to Him. But God had other ideas.
Instead of desiring tangible gifts God looked at people’s hearts. He wanted them to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him.
What are you giving to God? Is it a tithe here or there? A bit of time on Sundays and maybe some prayer time during the week?
God requires the same things from us today – act justly, love mercy and to walk humbly with Him.
Prayer: Lord, You give us the greatest guidance and know the best way we can live. May we not offer You the things we strive for but always follow Your heart in our generosity. Amen.
How are you going in acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with God?
