Ancestor’s Antics

As children we forget that adults actually have a life too and went through many different experiences even before we were born.

Genesis 30:1-43

Reference:  v.24  She named him Joseph, and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.” (NIV Bible)

Explore:  As children we are fairly self-centred.  Due to our inexperience and lack of understanding, we don’t empathise with others but only really react to what affects us.  Now as an adult I look back at some of the things that happened to my family and I realise that I had no concern about how my parents were coping during difficult times. I was only ever concerned about how I was affected that I never realised what a great impact some of these experiences could have had on my parents.  As children we forget that adults actually have a life too and went through many different experiences even before we were born.

Application:  The story of Joseph is one of the better known Bible stories, and thanks to the musical stageshow it is even known by many people outside church circles.  While Joseph is the star of the show, there is very little focus and understanding of what went on for his parents before Joseph was born.  As I read through chapters 29 and 30 I see the nations of Israel forming at each birth.  But they did not arrive without conflict and disharmony within the family.  Even before Joseph there is an intricate story woven together.  We must not undermine the stories of our ancestors as they play a pivotal part in who we are and where we have come from.  While we are certainly not bound by the experience of our previous generations, we are impacted by their journey.

Prayer:  Lord, you knit us together in our mother’s womb but even as adults You are moulding us and forming us.  May we follow You, our Heavenly Father, to live a life according to Your call.  Amen.

What part of your family’s history has played a role in who you are today?
