Explore: Believe it or not, in the last episode of City Homicide I was reminded about my faith. City Homicide is an Australian television drama. The series is set on the Homicide floor of a metropolitan police headquarters in Melbourne. In the last episode Detective Levitt witnessed a crime when he was off duty. He automatically went into police mode by chasing the assailant and then interviewing the witnesses. Unfortunately he forgot to check the identification of one of the witnesses who had given a false name and was crucial to the crime. When grilled by his senior as to why he made such a simple mistake the Detective Levitt defended himself by saying, 'I wasn't even on duty.' His Sergeant chastised him saying, "You're always on duty."
Application: Just like the detective, as Christians we are also always on duty. We don't sign in and sign out of following God. It's a full-time commitment. Job showed the extent of his duty to God when he confessed Him as his Saviour. Even though he was in immense pain and felt so alone he didn't sign off. He displayed such a persistent faith that it didn't matter whether he was rich with earthly wealth or writhing in pain and sorrow, he still proclaimed God as his Saviour. It's easy to praise God when all things are going well, but what do our songs of praise sound like when we are going through times of trouble? Do we have the faith to praise God, even when life seems to turn upside down? Just like a homicide detective and just like Job, we are always on duty.
Prayer: Lord, songs of praise are so free flowing when times are good. Help us to have a persistent faith like Job so that when times get tough we are still able to acknowledge You as our Saviour. Amen.
What do your songs of praise sound like when times are tough?
