It is important to have dreams and goals, but we must be careful that we are not disadvantaging someone else for our own achievements.
Reference: v.12 “Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife.” (NIV Bible)
Explore: This is a pretty full-on story from the Old Testament. Jacob’s daughter Dinah is ‘violated’ and her brothers seek revenge on the perpetrator as well as his whole company. While Dinah’s brothers are extreme in their retribution, it is incredible that Shechem felt he could pay a price for someone he had disgraced.
Application: Sometimes we can get very fixated on getting something. We may work extra shifts to gain the money needed to purchase something special; we may flatter and smooze someone to get ahead of the pack; we may spend many hours in study to acquire all the necessary knowledge to go the next level. It is important to have dreams and goals, but we must be careful that we are not disadvantaging someone else for our own achievements. Shechem was only thinking of himself when he dibilitated his entire group townsmen to fulfill his lustful desires with Dinah. And the result was disasterous. While it is good to work hard to achieve something, we must be wise enough to look around and see who is being affected.
Prayer: Lord, You have the bigger picture. So often we get consumed by our own goals and agendas that we do not respect the lives of those around us. Help us to view our situation with your eyes. Amen.
What goals do you have? How do they affect those around you?
