A Sibling’s Sacrifice

I explained to him that it was a matter of life or death.

John 12:20-36

Reference: ““Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.” ‭‭John‬ ‭12:27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Explore: I recently read a post on social media that had been shared thousands of times:

Today, I operated on a little girl. She needed O-blood. We didn’t have any, but her twin brother has O-blood.

I explained to him that it was a matter of life or death. He sat quietly for a moment, and then said goodbye to his parents.

I didn’t think anything of it until after we took his blood and he asked, “So, when will I die?”

He thought he was giving his life for hers. Thankfully they’ll both be fine.

Application: It is incredible how far people will go for those they love. Even a child is willing to make sacrifices for those who matter to them.

It’s a good reminder for us of how much Jesus must truly love us. He sacrificed His own life so we could have the best of lives.

We may not be called on to sacrifice our whole lives, but I do feel there are times we are called to sacrifice for the greater good. And even in living out our faith with integrity there is a good chance we are prompted to give up rather than receive from this world.

Isn’t it fortunate we have already received the greatest gift ever given?! I guess when we have it all, it doesn’t make it so hard to give the rest of us away.

Prayer: Lord, Your gift of love surpasses all else. May we appreciate Your sacrifice to us by showing great love to others. Amen.

What response have you made to Jesus’ sacrifice for you?
