Worm On A Road

The weather has been quite warm lately around my area. It’s been nice to be able to spend time outside without worrying about wearing 16 different layers!

As I’ve been out walking down my street I’ve noticed a few worms out on the asphalt. These grubs are supposed to be living in the soft dirt areas, so they are very out of place on the rock hard road surface. They wiggle and squirm trying to get to their destination.

The problem is, if the worm spends too long out of the place it’s meant to be then it can be in real danger. Either a bird can fly down and eat it, a car could run over it or, even worse, the sun can come up and gradually heat up the worm until it’s left crispy and fried.

I have been known to bend over and carefully pick up the squirming creature and put it back on the soft ground where it belongs. I never know whether I’m ruining its day, but I suspect I might just be saving its life.

I believe there are many paths we can follow. Some lead us closer to God, some lead us away from God. Some use the gifts and strengths God has given us, some try to make us someone we were not created to be.

If we spend too long on a path that leads us away from God and where we try to be someone we are not, we are just like a worm on asphalt. It’s much harder work for us to get anywhere and it can put us in a dangerous place. If we are not living according to the gifts and strengths God has given us, then life will be difficult. We’ll end up feeling like we’re a worm trying to burrow through asphalt.

But if we choose a path that allows us to use all our God-given gifts then we are much more likely to feel fulfilled and achieve great things.

Lord, You have blessed us all with gifts and abilities. Make us aware of what our strengths are and please open doors to opportunities that allow us to use them effectively. May we use them to bring You glory. Amen.

Are you currently in a place where you can use your gifts and abilities?
